Weather Station Upgrade PDF Print E-mail

We have just purchased a Boltek lightning detector. This unit will tell us both distance and direction of thunderstorms. We will have an online strike map showing current and recent storms. The unit is coming direct from the USA as the UK distributors seem to think that swapping $ for is a fair price. With a $2 pound at the emoment this is taking the **s. Look for site updates when it arrives.

August 2nd 2007: The Boltek has arived and in on test. Early indications are impressive but I could do with a few local storms to test it on! A new PC has been installed for the Boltek and my new weather station, a Davis Pro2, is being connected to it this weekend. The online weather station has been the Oregon wireless unit but it has been dogged with unreliable sensors so the Davis is coming online soon as a, hopefully better, replacement. The new PC has a database on it (MySQL) so archive searches will be possible in the near future.

August 16th 2007: The lightning detector has been mounted on the roof anf the NextStorm softwsare has been installed. We are awaiting an overlay map but I couldn't wait so I have added a Thunderstorm page to the weather section. It's updated every 5 minutes or so and is fascinating to watch storms developing over 200 miles away.

August 18th 2007: The map has now been installed so the lightning display should now make sense.
